The Science Behind a Chiropractic Adjustment
Updated: 7 days ago

Most people relish in the feeling of the post-adjustment high, but few question what is happening in your body when you get a chiropractic adjustment…
A chiropractic adjustment is a physiological event that occurs when the chiropractor (us) applies a calculated force (physics), into a specific point in your spine that is lacking proper movement. Your nervous system registers the force and sends a signal from your spine to your brain via your nerves. The brain receives the input and tells the spine to restore movement, release tension, and decrease sympathetic tone of the spine and autonomic nervous system which is constantly signaling either “fight or flight” or ”rest, heal, digest” to your body. Multiple things happen in your body from here
—
1. Decreased daily “fight or flight” state of the autonomic nervous system
2. Improved motion of your spine + less pain
3. Better proprioception (brain’s awareness of the body) - assists your body in healing itself and prevents injury and discoordination
4. Better cognitive function, decision making and emotional regulation due to the activation of the brain’s prefrontal cortex.Over time, regular chiropractic adjustments actually change the way your brain operates and perceives your body and your environment. This is called neuroplasticity-
Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to reorganize, change, and adapt its structure and connections throughout your life. This means that your nervous system actually creates lasting change with chiropractic care- not just momentary relaxation, but foundational improvement in your body’s operating system.
AKA- you become a better self-healer.
This is why we care for more than relieving your symptoms, that would be too easy. We care about the root of your healing ability which relates to the health of your spine and nervous system. While a single adjustment is shown to have a positive impact on brain function, repetitive chiropractic care is where the lasting changes are found. The more spinal tension you have, the more care you need. This is why our office offers intensive initial programs for those with high amounts of spinal and nervous system stress and transitions our members into a wellness routine of regular care for lifelong optimzation of your health.
Proactive > reactive every single time.
